Why Blog: 10 Benefits of Reading and Writing Blogs

What is a blog?

The dictionary defines a blog as a regularly updated website or web page, typically run by an individual or a small group, written in an informal or conversational style. On the other hand, Wikipedia states that a blog is a discussion or informational website published worldwide. It consists of discrete, often informal diary-style text entries. Why read blogs?

I started blogging just as the lock-down began in 2020. It was an impulse move on my side. I must say I did not really think it through. When the pandemic hit, I tried my best to be productive, and aside from making sure that my tasks from my job and our home were done, I challenged myself to read at least one book a week. I read random free books I found on Kindle, and one of the books I happened to read was about blogging. It contained what seemed to be elementary steps to follow. Since I was looking for something significant to do (since the company I worked in has been temporarily closed down), I took the leap! Like someone who has been hypnotized, I followed the steps, and voila! I had my very own website! (It actually took me ten more days to get it to work, all on my own! Thanks to Google and all the helpful blogs making information that I need available. They wrote in the terms that I understood since I absolutely had no background in creating a web page!)

What’s in it for me, you might be asking. It has been more than one year since I started. I’d like to think that I have improved in my writing and blogging skills, and I must say that I am enjoying the journey so far! This is why I am writing about it today.

Why read blogs? What benefits do reading and writing blogs give?

Why read blogs? Quick reading fix

If you are a natural reader, a blog can give you reading satisfaction in just a short period. It is like reading articles in a magazine. I am a reader and more of a non-fiction reader, to add to that. Since becoming a mom with a full-time job, I seldom find the time to read an entire book, so articles, whether in magazines, pamphlets, and the internet, give me my reading fix in a day or week.

Swift brain stretch

On the other hand, if you are not a reader, a blog can stretch your reading neurons. You might add to your vocabulary if you encounter a new word or two in the process. Why read blogs? This is why you need to read blogs once in a while.

Why read blogs? Fast information

When you are trying to find information or want to learn about something, a blog offers detailed information. Google will also give you options, and you can either choose or read them all. What I like about blogs is that most bloggers would write about their direct experiences. When I make travel plans for my family in the pre-pandemic time, I intentionally look for blogs because bloggers give valuable tips.

Critical thinking hat

Since blogs are sometimes opinionated, you can compare your own opinion with theirs. This nudges you to put your essential thinking hat on. Do you agree with the writer or not? Do you agree why read blogs? This is one of the reasons why.

Why read blogs? A dash of inspiration

Depending on the type of blog you are reading, most, if not all, offers a piece of advice or two about topics of your interest (you have reasons you chose to read it, right?).  You, then, get to be inspired and motivated.  I experience this first-hand when trying out recipes for my family. As I am a functional (not great) cook of our household, I am more courageous in trying out recipes I never thought of trying before! Videos have become popular recently, but I find that I still prefer reading over watching.

Why write blogs? Creative outlet

I have transitioned from reading to writing blogs. Let me tell you that it has become my outlet for the months that I have been writing, especially in the early pandemic. It forced me to think positively (so I will write positively as well), and I must say that it helped me tremendously to cope during that time. Now, when I write, I learn more about the topics I am writing (since I do research), and I also know to use new words.

Documentation

Should you decide to create your blog, you will now have a good place for documenting your experiences or anything you want to share. I recently published a letter for my son for the future, and it felt so relaxed! Never have I imagined that I’d be able to do that. Since I am not into social media so much, I love publishing that in long-form content.

Organizational skills

Composing an article pushes you to organize the information you want to share. You have to plan which tidbits go first, how to introduce them, how to keep your readers engaged, how to close, and a lot more! Also, inputting categories and tags is quite tedious but a fun part of blogging.

More confidence

As you write more and do better at organizing your ideas, blogging gives you a sense of confidence, whether in thinking, writing, or sharing your opinions.

Sharing opportunity

When I am with my friends, colleagues, students, and families, I love sharing information I read or heard somewhere. For me, it feels good that they will be able to use this information to help them in some ways. Blogging has given me far-reaching opportunities to share not only with people I know but even with people all over the world. I am delighted to see that my blog appears in organic searches because I know that I could help someone in some other continent in my own little way.

Whether you decide to start your blog today or just keep reading blogs, I want to thank you and know that I wish you well. Send me a message if you have more questions or need help because I will be happy to assist you. Have a great day!
